- I've never tried this with a SUN: What you can do is get a pc
- tower case, get a cable built at a local cable builder, install
- the drives into the case, and plug a cable from the SUN to the case.
-
- I bought a case with 230 watt power supply from a local computer
- repair depot for $100, had a custom cable made for $30, and
- put 4 drives in for my Macintosh, 2 full height WREN-IV, 2
- half height 3-1/2" drives. One full height is in the 1-1/2
- height drive bay, mounted with screws, and one is down in the
- body, where mother boards normally go. I had to prop it up
- so I could get a screw in through a mounting hole, but it's
- secured. I still have room for one more 3-1/2" drive, and
- hopefully soon an internal CDROM.
-
- On the SUN the internal drive is at SCSI address 3, you can
- add 3 more drives to them at addresses 0, 1 and 2 without having
- to renumber any other devices. You can have up to 7 hard disks
- on one SUN through modifying the kernel. You do this by
- commenting out the 2 tapes and 1 CDROM on SCSI bus 0 (in your
- kernel config file), taking 3 disks (sd4,sd5, & sd6) from
- SCSI bus 1, and modifying them to be on bus 0.
-
- Depending on the cable you have (or get) to connect this box to
- your SUN, you will want the cable builder to put either a DB50
- or Mini-50 connector on one end of a 50 wire flat ribbon cable,
- with SCSI header blocks every 8-12 inches on the cable, starting
- about 12-18 inches from the outside connector. Install terminator
- resistor packs on the last device on this cable, and daisy chain
- the box at the end, after any other devices in the chain. Including
- the length of the internal cable (the one you have built) the
- entire length of cable run should be less than 20 feet.
