- 1) Performance on a sun running either OW2 or OW3 is *STILL* not as good as
- vanilla X - end of discussion.
-
- I found myself stuck at a job sys. admining for a site with 100+ Suns (ranging
- from IPCs to 670MP servers). OW2/3 is a dog on ALL the various machines.
- Previous administration had brainwashed everyone into using and liking OW2/3.
- After screaming for a while I was determined to show them why I was so adamant
- against OW2/3. FYI OW2 (everything, demos, binaries, libs, man pages) takes
- up approx 20-30 meg. disc space, OW3 (again everything) takes up 80 meg. disc
- space, X11R4/5 (again everything) takes up 20-30 meg. disc space - sure, you
- could throw everything you don't need out. Anyways, back to the story, so,
- I slap X11R5 in place, snag the OLWM window manager and slap that into place
- and TA-DA! Vanilla X but yet it still looks and feels like OW2/3 BUT it
- acts like X - its FAST! But then people come in and moan and groan that
- filemanger, cmdtool, etc don't work. Simple solution: slap the libs from the
- OW release in place and everything is HAPPY (not the whole libs remind you -
- just the weird ones like xview/tt*/etc)! ONLY major problem I've run into
- is that NeWS programs won't run using this setup - but, for me, who cares.
- I hardly ever use AnswerBook and I have ghostscript for postscript viewing.
-
- Yes, there is a BETTER WAY! Just say "NO" to OW2/3.

-
- PS - ANOTHER big reason to do this is that LOTS of PD X software WILL NOT
- run under OW2/3. WHY? For some reason Sun is distributing an incompatible
- version of libXt - THIS REALLY SUCKS!
-
- PPS - Any brave souls want to put the power of the machine back into their
- hands I can send them more info on how.
