- Hi everybody.
-
- I've been asked to help fix a problem with a remote SPARCstation 2. I
- can only get at it through telnet and talking to a guy at the machine
- over the phone. The problem they are having is that they can't invoke
- anything from the background pop-up menu. Whenever they try, the system
- writes an error like 'getwd: can't open ..' across the middle of the
- background. However, I can telnet in, set the DISPLAY variable back to
- the machine I'm on, and run any of their apps that I want, so I know the
- software they want to run is itself intact. I also know that a new
- sysadmin had tried to move home directories on that machine a few days
- before, and apparently caused the problem. In untar-ing, he didn't
- preserve file permissions, then in trying to fix that, he did a 'chmod
- 644 .*', which goofed up the directory above. I have also found various
- other screwey permission on the system (eg. /var/tmp was set to 600).
- So, I suspect permission problems-- but where? The users can log in,
- and openwindows (ver 3.0, BTW) does start, but that's it. They can't
- even bring up a command tool. The /usr/openwin tree seems ok, but it's
- so big that I'd probably miss it if it weren't. Has anyone seen a
- problem like this before? Or does anyone know what files might have
- been messed up that are needed to open programs from the pop-up menu?
- It's not the /usr/openwin/lib/openwin-menu-* files, those are ok, and
- the menus *do* display.
-
- Any help GREATLY appreciated.
