  24. (again within what is possible with NFS).

  28.    I've got 500 workstations and Sun isn't exactly rushing down here to install

  31. This is correct to a point.  The lockd patch must be placed on the
  32. machines that serve the NFS filesystems as well as the clients.

  34. As for the large task of installation over 500+ machines, an idea that
  35. comes immediately to mind is to use something like rdist (which is
  36. bundled into the OS, BTW).  I'd expect that the patching could happen
  37. over night without much incident.

  39.    Does someone have the secret of the universe here?  Sun has been
  40.    no help.  Meanwhile, I've got scores of products (Wingz, WP5.1, etc)
  41.    that don't function properly because of this.

  43. The secret of the universe is to organize your resources to minimize
  44. the effects of various known gotcha in a networked UNIX environment.
  45. Counting on NFS locking is one of those things.  I don't thing that
  46. _any_ vendor has it right, in fact when I worked at one that shall
  47. remain nameless, we wished that we could have one like Sun's!
