  21. I have a similar problem on my machine running DNS without NIS.  In order to
  22. fix this problem you must modify and rebuild the resolver library.  It is not a
  23. trivial problem, but SUN support did send me a step-by step procedure(It varies
  24. with the version of the OS you are running.  This mod is not supported by SUN
  25. since it does cause some peculiarities which are listed below:
  26.  
  27. 1) inconsistent behavior between statically and dynamically linked executables
  28.  
  29. 2) total dependency of system on route/connection to valid nameserver as listed
  30. in /etc/resolv.conf (no local /etc/hosts lookups at all)
  31.  
  32. 3) dependency upon external nameserver for all new host to IP address
  33. translation additions, including "localhost"
  34.  
  35. and a couple of others.

  37. I decided to go ahead and try to run NIS instead.
