- The background: About 16 Suns from SLC's to IPX's, which are served by a
- SparcServer 4/470 w/ 5 gig of HD and 192 meg RAM. The 4/470 is the master
- ypserver, while an ELC acts as a slave server.
-
- In the past week or two, the ypserv process on the 4/470 has been chewing
- up *lots* of CPU. There's been a fair amount of activity on the net lately,
- including adding an ELC and an IPX, and rebuilding the kernel to support
- PPP connections, but I can't trace this sudden spurt to anything in particular.
-
- Here's what I've currently got:
-
- fripp:~# ps aux | grep yp
- USER PID %CPU %MEM SZ RSS TT STAT START TIME COMMAND
- root 67 46.9 0.1 128 256 ? S Dec 102966:30 ypserv
- root 76 0.0 0.0 56 0 ? IW Dec 10 0:00 rpc.ypupdated
- root 69 0.0 0.0 56 0 ? IW Dec 10 0:00 ypxfrd
- bin 71 0.0 0.0 40 0 ? IW Dec 10 0:00 ypbind
- root 21212 0.0 0.1 40 256 p0 S 09:20 0:00 grep yp
-
- fripp:~# uptime
- 9:21am up 4 days, 1:07, 19 users, load average: 0.88, 0.70, 0.97
-
- Now, a little math shows that of the 5827 minutes the system has been up,
- 2966 minutes of CPU time have been eaten up by ypserv; an average of 50.9% of the
- total CPU time! And since this machine is running our corporate order application
- and its database manager, this number is 'way too high.
-
- Now, even stranger is the fact that ypwhich shows that the 4/470 is being served
- by the slave NIS server on the ELC!!
-
- What I'm asking for, folks, is if any of you have ever seen this type of situation,
- and if so, what fixes have worked (or not) for you.
-
- Since I'm not an NIS god, I'm also interested in any NIS diagnostic programs
- that exist that might help me determine why this puppy's out of control.
-
- Thanks for any help you've got on this; if interest or answers warrant, I'll
- post a summary.
