- Find some qualified "network certifiers." "Late Collision" means that
- your network is broken.
-
- A "late collision" is a collision that afflicts a large packet after
- the first "slot time". It can only happen if:
- 1. some other machine on your network is broken and not detecting
- collisions.
- 2. your network is "too big" for the start of packets to propagate
- from one end of the network to the other.
-
- (2) is usually the cause. The most common errors that cause it are:
- a. violating the "2/4 repeater rule"
- b. using long drop cables on 10BaseT transceivers
- c. chaining too many drop cables together.
-
- Most systems do not complain about late collisions. They silently
- ignore them. I think that is unwise, because each late collision means
- - a large packet was lost and will not be automatically retransmitted
- by the MAC chip
- - an unknowable number of small packets have lost, with no inidication
- anywhere but a higher layer time out.
-
- Losing packets is not good, whether by late collisions or otherwise.
- A 1% packet loss rate on an ethernet will reduce your NFS performance by
- 90% using the common, NFS default timeouts.
