- At first blush this question may seem more suited to a cdrom
- newsgroup than a Novell one, but since the problems we are
- encountering are directly related to a network environment I
- wanted to see if any other Novell admins had any solutions:
-
- We have a CD-ROM drive on our Netware 3.11 server with SCSI
- Express running to allow its use by all users. Although from
- time to time we have specialized CD-ROMs to mount, our staff
- has expressed interest in having a general-reference CD-ROM
- of some kind left in the drive that the staff could access.
- This is a staff of public affairs writers, so they would be
- interested in general references (thesaurus, encyclopedia, etc)
- rather than something technical. This is also a DOS-only
- office, so Windows products are out.
-
- We first contacted Microsoft about obtaining a DOS version of
- Bookshelf and a network license that would cover our 20 users.
- At first this was going well but it later got bogged down by
- issues related to the licensing and also the fact that
- Microsoft apparently is putting its energy into the Windows
- version of Bookshelf and may not be putting out a DOS version
- this year.
-
- It was then recommended that we consider Toolworks Reference
- Library from Software Toolworks in Novato, Calif. I spoke
- with them yesterday, and they said (a) as far as they know
- their CD-ROM will not run in a network environment, and (b)
- even if we got it to run we would have to pay full retail times
- number of users (about $1,500 all told), which is a bit pricey
- for us (we would like to keep it to a third of that cost).
-
- Has anyone else had better luck with a general-purpose reference
- CD-ROM in a DOS network environment? We'd like either an
- encyclopedia or something with several reference works; a
- dictionary alone, for example, would not be that appealing.
-
- Thanks for any suggestions.
