- Hi, everybody
-
- I need to reconfigure our computer network and need some advice.
- So far we have been using only UNIX machines and I had no problems
- networking them and sharing the NeXT printer. Now we need to buy
- computers for several people and, although I would love to give
- them all NeXT stations, this is far beyond of what we can afford.
- So, we decided to go with cheaper Macs. My first thought was to
- sell my NeXT Cube and buy 2-3 Macs instead. It turns out, however,
- that I cannot get more than ~$4,000 for it, so I am looking for
- alternatives. I have not upgraded yet to 3.0, but from what I
- heard it offers some compatibility with AppleTalk.
-
- I would like to ask you if the following is possible with 3.0:
- 1. Can NeXT be connected to a network of Macs?
- 2. Can NeXT printer that I have now be used as a network printer
- for the Macs?
- 3. If we buy a large disk drive and connect it to the NeXT, can
- the NeXT be used as a file server for the Mac network?
- 4. I will need to use primarily Word and Excel to be compatible
- with other people. Will Executor be enough for it.
- 5. Will I be able to send and receive Mac e-mail from my Cube?
-
- I would appreciate your comments, and if all of this is possible
- (please say yes, I love my Cube) could you give some pointers
- as to how to do it or where to find the information about it.
