- It looks like an important sector of my external harddisk just bit the
- dusk. I get
-
- Target 5: Hardware Error.... Block a8H <retries>
- sd2(5,0): sense key 0x4 add'l 0x3 messages
- Block in error 168; Partition a FS, Sector 8
-
- almost continuously (the new ROM continuously report this problem).
- fsck always reports sectors 8-15 (I believe) to be bad, although I can
- still read most of the hard disk (I hope my dump worked!).
-
- So, I somehow need to tell my NeXT that it should map this sector to
- be bad on a very low level (and perhaps check it). Preferably, I
- wouldn't destroy the harddisk information in the process.
-
- If you have good answers to
-
- [a] Is there a tool/way to diagnose and remap bad sectors
- on my NeXT?
-
- [b] Can I take my harddisk to a Mac, and remap this sector
- without losing my NeXT file system?
- or
- [c] Is it ever feasible to change some low-level disk
- information without destroying high-level formatting?
-
- these answers would be highly appreciated.
