  14. It looks like an important sector of my external harddisk just bit the
  15. dusk. I get

  17.     Target 5: Hardware Error.... Block a8H <retries>
  18.     sd2(5,0): sense key 0x4 add'l 0x3 messages
  19.     Block in error 168; Partition a FS, Sector 8
  20.  
  21. almost continuously (the  new ROM continuously  report  this problem).
  22. fsck always reports sectors 8-15 (I believe) to be bad, although I can
  23. still read most of the hard disk (I hope my dump worked!).

  25. So, I somehow need to  tell my NeXT that it  should map this sector to
  26. be  bad  on a  very  low level (and  perhaps  check it). Preferably, I
  27. wouldn't destroy the harddisk information in the process.

  31.     [a] Is there a tool/way to diagnose and remap bad sectors
  32.     on my NeXT?

  34.     [b] Can I take my harddisk to a Mac, and remap this sector
  35.     without losing my NeXT file system?

  37.     [c] Is it ever feasible to change some low-level disk
  38.     information without destroying high-level formatting?
