  17. In article <1992Dec17.182348.5930@adobe.com> byer@adobe.com (Scott
  18. Byer) writes:
  19. > Now, as far as the fonts on sonata are concerned - they're OK.
  20. > One look and I could tell exactly how they were created (can you
  21. > say "pathforall", I knew you could).  And while that's *slimy*,
  22. > it's not illegal,
  23.  . . .
  24. > Personally, I can't see how anybody thought these things were high
  25. > quality - they have *no hinting*!  And really, when you look at
  26. > them closely, they look like garbage on the screen.  They'll print
  27. > out ok at 400dpi, but not nearly as good as a fully hinted font
  28. > will.
  29.
  30. Anyone who thinks these fonts are "commercial-quality" can download
  31. them and look at the "Bodoni" at about the 10-point size on the
  32. screen.  Or, for that matter, at a slightly smaller size, printed.  I
  33. don't think "garbage" is much if any exaggeration.  If Adobe tried to
  34. sell such crap they'd not be in the font business today.
  35.
  36. Since these fonts are inferior to the genuine ones, the natural
  37. question is  do any of the names infringe trademarks?   Or does there
  38. have to be an actual competing product before trademark law applies?
  39. (Obviously I'm not a lawyer!)  If "Bodoni" actually looks like
  40. something designed by Bodoni, that name might be safe (descriptive
  41. names aren't trademarks), but how about the others?  I think Palatino
  42. (a Zapf design) is a trademark, but no garbage-Palatino font was
  43. among those posted.
  44.
  45.  -- Derek
  46.
  47. PS: I wish I had a postscript version of Hunt Library (the font), the
  48. display face Zapf drew when he was visiting faculty at Carnegie Tech.
  49. (It's used for the inscription at the entrance to Hunt Library [the
  50. building].)  Also, I think the "old CMU logo" font was a Zapf design.
  51. Why CMU switched to Bodoni for their "corporate look" is a mystery to
  52. me---particularly since everybody tries to reproduce the logo on a
  53. postscript printer and ends up using Times Bold instead.  Even the
  54. posted "Bodoni" looks more credible, as you can see if you actually
  55. download it:
