- Sigh. I'll try this again.
- I have a standalone NeXTcube. I have SLIP (the daemon is installed in the
- boot process; but the SLIP connection is brought up manually only when
- needed). I have Emacs3.0. BUT; Emacs3.0 (and prior versions) always
- displays a "unknown host "(my host name)"" message in the minibuffer
- when I start it. The mouse cannot be used to control the cursor. The
- menu FILE and EDIT options do nothing. All other .apps work just fine.
- So what's wrong here? Is there something I need to add to a host config
- table or NetInfo? Is it that Emacs3.0 fully expects to work on machines
- attached to real ethernet cables? What? What is Emacs3.0 doing that's
- different that all other apps? emacs (the command line emacs) works just
- fine? ???????
- I'd like to use Emacs3.0; so, if you have it working on a standalone NeXT
- and use SLIP like I do (daemon loaded; line down), I'd like to hear from
- you. Tell me (explicitly, please) how you installed SLIP and how you
- installed Emacs3.0. I must be doing SOMETHING different than you are.
-
- Thanks.

- (A lot of software - like FrameMaker - try to access the network; but they
- load and work fine when the network (SLIP) is not available. So why not
- Emacs3.0?)
