- We conducted a large scale investigation of several possible CAD/CAE vendors
- a few years ago. After having made the choice and subsequently put in much work
- to fit the tools into our design and manufacturing needs, I would recommend
- these important factors:
- 1. We have NEVER found any "turnkey" solutions in these tools. Unless you are
- willing to totally adopt a vendor's design process you WILL have to adapt
- and customize the tools you buy to fit your design needs.
- 2. It is more important to buy a system with reasonably good tools and
- excellent openness and customizability than to buy a system with the
- "best" point solution tool and sacrifice openness/adaptability. The
- concept of a framework into which you can plug various tools from many
- vendors or even in-house tools will give you long-term growth capability
- in your tool set.
-
- Having agonized over the choice and finally making a decision, we have since
- confirmed that we made the right choice for our needs in buying Mentor. The
- ability to respond quickly to changing needs within our design community makes
- everyone happy. And the ability to encapsulate our own tools and processes
- in the framework means we now have a basis for continuing to improve the design
- methods.
