- What is the natural bit-depth that Quicktime movies use? If I use a different
- depth, will I see a serious performance hit?
-
- The "natural depth" of a QuickTime movie is the bit depth that was chosen for
- it when it was compressed, which can be different for different movies (it
- could even be different for different frames within a movie, but I suspect
- that's pretty rare). There is definitely a benefit to be had from playing the
- movie back at the depth it was created for, when you know what that is.
-
- Unfortunately, I don't know of any guaranteed to find that depth other than
- writing a (fairly simple) program, though perhaps one of the various free
- movie playing utilities can do it. If you can't get that sort of information,
- you can sometimes tell just by looking at the movie. Also, if you know what
- compressor was used, that can help narrow the search (for instance, I believe
- that Apple's Video compressor is the only standard QuickTime compressor that
- can create >8 bit movies).
-
- Thanks.
