  14. facts that it costs money and I find the "scanning disk for viruses" dialog
  15. boxes annoying, it apparantly can be configured in a variety of ways.  Most
  16. of the machines I've seen it installed on have it configured so that you can
  17. abort a disk scan if you like.  What typically happens is I watch somebody
  18. put a floppy in, not want to wait the few seconds to wait for the scan to
  19. finish, and hit the abort button.  Some people seem to have trained
  20. themselves to abort the scan almost automatically every time they put a disk
  21. in.  This makes SAM totally useless.

  23. Well Roy, while I can understand your objection to paying more (I myself use
  24. disinfectant more often than sam, which was bundled with my computer when i
  25. bought it)

  27. Keep in mind
  28. 1) Lots of people (network administrators) like the fact that sam is supported
  29. over a network. Only Virex also does this and its future may be in question
  30. since Microcom sold its utilities off.
  31. 2)Lots of people also like the security features. If you dont like the
  32. scanning of floppies, turn it off. If you like scanning but dont want to allow
  33. aborting, turn that option off. Sam is very configurable. Disfectant will only
  34. stop a) viruses that already exist. Sam can try to tell you suspicious
  35. activity. Yes, 99.99% of the time, it's just being paranoid and annoying, but
  36. its nice to have the .01% sometimes. b) the init which comes with it does not
  37. actively scan for viruses on floppies (and cant be told to scan the hard drive
  38. manually. you have to run the main application), it only stops you from running
  39. infected applications. Obviously this is a good thing and disinfectant is
  40. wonderful and free. But Sam does do more.
  41. The question should be:
  42. "If I am a computer user, I need a virus protection program. Do I need the
  43. networking and configurablility of sam as well as its ability to scan
  44. compressed files, or do I need a simple scan/disinfect utility?"
  45. The former response is a cry for help for SAM. The latter, which in general, I
  46. admit is about 70-80% of normal mac owners can be smoothed over with
  47. disinfectant.

  49. PS Both are great as far as fast updates. Disinfectant usually has a patch out
  50. within hours-days...Symantec unfortunately takes a day or two more (rarely of
  51. course does this matter) but also mails update cards to registered owners (who
  52. might not have a modem) and maintains a bbs for support and downloading
  53. settings files
