-
- Not quite. Anything on the Desktop (with the exception of the Trash Can
- and any volume icons) is actually kept in an invisible (under
- System 7) folder called "Desktop Folder" on the volume they were
- stored or created in. Therefore, they are still connected to whatever volume
- they were moved from. That's why if you, for example, drag Microsoft Word
- to the desktop to use, you can hit cmd-Y (Put Away) to return it to its
- folder. The Desktop is an amalgamation of whatever resides in the Desktop
- Folders of any and all mounted volumes (CD-ROMs, Hard Drvies, Disks, etc.)
- The one exception is folders and files created on the Desktop itself. They are
- created in the Desktop Folder of your startup disk.
-
- As for what caused your problem, if the servicer removed the
- aforementioned Desktop Folder from your friend's HD, all the files on the
- Desktop would be gone.
