- : I have an old Jasmine DirectDrive 100 that causes Mac plus and and SE
- : machines to freeze up during system startup. The symptoms are:
- :
- : 1) The machine boots from another disk running system seven
- : 2) The startup sequence seems to be going normally until it should
- : look up the jasmine drive and place its icon on the desktop.
- : 3) At that time the drive light on the jasmine turns red,
- : stays red, and the machine freezes up. It isn't even possible
- : to move the cursor with the mouse.
- :
- : I tried this on two different Mac SE machines, and one Mac Plus, and
- : the behaviour is the same on all machines. An SE-30 will boot
- : normally, the jasmine disk comes up as usual and nothing freezes.
- :
- : If the bug is in the disk drive itself, it must be a rather subtle
- : one, as the disk seems to be working all right on all of the machines
- : above when they are running system six or lower.
- :
- : This is a problem as my home box is an old plus, don't plan to buy a
- : new machine anytime soon, but would like to run system 7 very soon.
- :
- : My theory is that there is some kind of bug or at least an
- : incompatibilty in the SCSI driver code in 7.0.1. that will only bite
- : older machines. Does anyone know if a newer version of the system or
- : some of the tuneup kits will fix this problem?
- :
- Close... not a bug, but the driver for the Jasmine drive is not System 7
- compatible. Try to get a copy of Silverlining or one of the other 3rd
- party disk formatters if you can.
-
- BTW, System 7 on a Plus is not going to leave you much memory for applications
- to run in. Unless there is something you gotta have from 7.x why not just
- stick with 6.0.5?
