- Did the hard disk in question originally have a custom icon, which
- vanished when the problem started? If so, then I can tell you the likely
- problem, since I've run into it myself a couple of times.
- When you put a System 7 custom icon on a file, the icon gets stored as
- a resource in that file, and the file's "Has custom icon" bit is set so the
- Finder knows to look for the icon. Folders and disks can't have resources
- added to them in this fashion; so when you put a custom icon on a folder or
- disk, the "Has custom icon" bit is still set, and an invisible file named
- "Icon<carriage return>" is created in the disk/folder to hold the icon.
- If that invisible "Icon<cr>" file later gets messed with or deleted, the
- Finder gets very confused, and won't let you add a new custom icon.
- The solution to this is simple: go into one of the newer versions of
- ResEdit, get info on the problem disk or folder, and clear its "Has custom
- icon" bit. You should now be able to add a new custom icon.
