- If you buy A/UX, GNU Emacs is available. You get X11 and a nice
- version of UNIX, too.

- Yes, the shareware Mac editor Alpha supports EMACS bindings AND
- you can costomize it using the TCL language.

- As you said, A/UX has it all. Else a large set of GNU utilities
- is available, and the MPW shell (shell only, no scripts, tools
- or anything) is available through anonymous FTP. If you buy MPW
- you get a LOT of tools (though not THE SAME as unde UNIX, only
- SIMILAR) and C, C++, Pascal, Asm, Linker, help system, OO framework,
- and a year of updates. Only $1,250. Buy A/UX instead :-)

-
- HyperCard is not for the serious programmer. (Well, it could be
- since it┤s a nice demo generator and I have written some apps
- in HyperCard, but for the general case it┤s not)
-
- Yes, you have to buy HyperCard. You can also write externals
- in C or Pascal and plug in.
-
- Think C is ideal for normal work, since it┤s compact and fast.
- MPW is slower, but more powerful, and gives you a SHELL. Both
- have produced leading-edge applications.
-
- If you want to communicate with your workstation, you could
- get MacX or a simple terminal emulator (Like ZTerm) and run
- some kind of remote network, and use the Mac ONLY as an (X)
- terminal, and retain the familiar UNIX look-and-feel. And get
- busted b ythe phone company for not paying the bills :-)
-
- As for which Mac, the Perfoma 600 or IIvi seems to be the
- lower end of what you need (PageMaker is a resource hog)
-
- Cheers,
