- asks about passing diskettes through airport security.
-
- I keep a diskette in the back of my personal organizer, and pass it through
- airport security fairly often. My experience has been that after about
- six months of life in the binder, which includes roughly 20 passes through
- _domestic_ x-ray security machines and lots of temperature fluctuation abuse,
- a diskette will go bad. The diskette also visits a variety of Macs, whose
- drive heads may not have been cleaned in a while, so there are lots of possible
- sources of contamination. I doubt that X-rays are the primary culprit.
-
- I've heard that some x-ray machines outside of the U.S. use substantially
- higher doses.
