- |My friend has a Quadra 700. On her Mac, the Memory control panel enables
- |the creation of a RAM disk as a portion of RAM. Once initiated, this RAM

- |rather than shutdown, the Mac even retains the contents of this RAM disk

-
- |I have a MacIIsi. The Memory control panel does not provide this
- |RAM disk option. Why not?
-
- All Macs test memory during a boot. Older Macs test destructively,
- leaving the memory empty afterwards. Newer Macs do not destroy the
- contents of memory.
-
- This behavior cannot be changed because it's in the ROMs. No patch or
- INIT could fix it, it's too early in the boot.
-
- When the Quadras, Powerbooks, and newer Macs were designed, they
- simultaneously switched the memory test and added the RAM disk. The
- Apple RAM disk is automatically disabled on machines that don't
- provide the non-destructive memory test.
-
- Now, there are third-party and shareware RAM disks that work on all
- Macs, but they do not retain the contents of the RAM disk after a
- boot.
-
- Be that as it may, I've found that a RAM disk is the most powerful way
- to speed up a Mac.
