  16. I am considering the purchase of a Mac Performa 600 (either with or w/o the
  17. CD-ROM drive).  What I am seeking is serious, non-predjudicial
  18. information on this machine.

  22. What, if any, are the limitations of the Performa version of Sys-7 and
  23. how hard (expensive) is it to install the original Sys-7 or even a
  24. later version of Sys-6?

  26. The machine claims to be a 32 mhz clock speed.  Is this real? Or is
  27. there some reason that the P-600 is slower than other 32 mhx 030
  28. based machines?

  30. The system I am looking at has, I beleve, a 160meg HD. Does anyone
  31. know about the speed of this drive?  Reliability?

  33. What aout the CD rom drive that is included with the P-600CD?  Is it
  34. up-to-snuff?  Is it as fast as, say, an aftermarket drive?

  36. Basically, I am interested in the system because it has a lot of the
  37. features that I am looking for, and seems to be fast enough, plus the
  38. $$$ outlay is reasonable (for a MAC that is :->) About 2000 for the
  39. P-600 (4-160 512k vram) and $2500 for the CD version (5-160 1 meg
  40. vram) w/o monitor.  This is at (uggh) Sears and includes a year of
  41. on-site service and tech support (???) as well as Claris Works bundled
  42. software, extended keyboard and several CDroms to start with.

  44. My main purpose is DTP, but I will want to also use it for other
  45. functions like data base and maybe communications.

  47. What are the shortcomings of this machine, the strengths, peculiarities?  
  48. I would like neutral advice, please.  I know that the Performa series
  49. is aimed at the household market.  But I have a limited budget and
  50. would like to get the maximum speed, storage and usability for my
  51. buck.  I really want to get the Mac, most of my files are Mac, but
  52. now-adays with the DOS (sorry for swearing) machines coming down so
  53. low in price, unless I can get something like this Performa for this
  54. kind of money, I might be forced to look at the DOS.  Please save me
  55. from this fate.. give me some advice :-).

  58. will summarize my findings to the net.

  60. I could also use a piece of advice on decent, yet inexpensive laser
  61. and/or ink-jet printers that may be useful for DTP on this system.
