- Unless the modem itself is faulty (or doesn't perform pulse dialing), I'd
- tend to search the problem among the following points:
- - phone line connection. You may know that some part of the italian
- telephone network is quite old and still brings old fashioned 4-holes
- plug...Even the standard 3-holes plug can give some problems: if you
- have
- more telephones you should correctly bridge two of the three jacks.
- - phone misuse. When pulse dialing with the modem you must be sure that
- the
- other telephones on the same line are well hung up (don't try to monitor
- what's going on), otherwise they'll keep the line closed while the
- modem's relay worthlessly attempting to open it...
- - tone detection. I once experienced problems with a Global Village modem
- bought in the USA, which wouldn't recognize italian tone standards.
- Since the fax software insisted checking the line before dialing, I
- never
- could get a fax sent...not before carefully reading the modem manual and
- finding the hidden chooser dialog with the preference settings!
-
- By a standard multitester your friend might check if the line relay works
- (after ATH1 the modem line input should show some tens of Ohms, after ATH0
- it should become infinity), and if the pulse rate is correct (it should be
- around 9-10 pulses per second).
-
- Hope it helps!
