- Hi Netters,
- I would like to offer some of my experiences with my new Duo 230 and
- System7.1
- and then ask for any comments or suggestions.
- Well I really love my new machine, but I have had more than a few problems
- with it. At first I thought it was hardware related, but then after some
- trial and error I discovered that it was software... in particular is was
- system 7.1 and some system extensions/ utilities.
- The problems cropped up when I was testing out some software that was
- incompatible with system7. The system froze and I was forced to press the
- hard shutdown key in the back. Unfortunately upon start-up the disk was
- not recognized. In fact, booting off of the disktools floppy gave me the
- dreaded message "This Disk is Damaged. Do you want to initialize?". Of
- couse I said
- no and desperately tried to ressurect my drive. The solution was using
- MacTools 2.0. It gave me the message that the Volume information blocks
- were corrupted.
- Fortunately it was able to repair and I was on my merry way.
- After some investigation I discovered that this happened all the time
- upon hard shutdown. After further investigation I discovered that when I
- installed a virgin system the hard disk survived hard shutdowns. I am
- pretty sure that
- the culprits are Extensions Manager and Before Dark. Both modify the
- system
- in some way. Currently I am running with a minimum of extensions being
- very wary after my experiences.
- My question to everyone is, has anyone else encountered this problem? Am
- I
- doing something wrong? Is there a solution? Thanks....
