- There is no good dim sum in Michigan!
-
- mu> Two scanners I saw advertised in Macwarehouse which fit these
- mu> descriptions are: Typist Plus Graphics $339
- mu>
- mu> Lightning Scan 400 with READ-IT! $359
- mu>
- mu> I have the following questions and would appreciate answers to them:
- mu>
- mu> 1. Has anyone tried either one of these scanners, both to scan text
- mu> and to scan graphics? Were there any difficulties?
- mu>
-
- The biggest challenge of a handheld scanner is steadiness of your hand. You
- can buy a guide to help you out in scanning but it does not solve all the
- problems. If the graphics is small, you can scan it in before your hand moves.
- The larger graphics gave me the biggest headache. Typist Plus has the OCR
- software built-in while LightningScan has the software bundled. You can
- upgrade Read-It to their latest Pro 4.0, which is more versatile. The OCR part
- requires a lot of memory and CPU speed helps.
-
- mu> 2. Is it possible to scan a document containing both text and
- mu> graphics so that the text is scanned as text and the graphics as
- mu> graphics? Or does such a document need to be scanned as all graphics?
-
- I know Read-It! does not scan a picture and text on the same page and convert
- them accordingly. Actually the text is scanned as a TIFF file and read by the
- OCR software anyway.
-
- mu> 3. Do these scanners come with software, or does one need to buy it
- mu> separately? Which software is best for these type of scanners? If the
- mu> scanners come with software, which one of the two comes with the
- mu> better software?
-
- LightningScan 400 is bundled with ThunderWare (scanning software) and
- Read-It!. I think the Pro version also has a grayscale or B/W touch up
- software bundled. I don't know about Tyypist Plus.
-
- mu> 4. Where is the best place to purchase these scanners? Has anyone
- mu> seen them advertised for less than the Macwarehouse prices?
-
- MacConnection.
-
- mu> 5. Should prices of the scanners continue to go down in the near
- mu> future? Is it worth buying now if I don't have any immediate need for
- mu> one?
-
- True, but it's a lot of fun and uses for it.
-
- mu> 6. Are there any other scanners in the same price range which are
- mu> better than the two mentioned above?
-
- Well, ScanMan from Logitech is less expensive until I look at their SCSI box.
- It's more difficult to set the SCSI address and a SCSI terminator is not
- included. Easier with LightningScan and the terminator is included.
