  11. I have successfully forced recalcitrant fax-modem software to relinquish my
  12. modem port by simply going to the chooser, selecting a printer (e.g.
  13. Imagewriter) and assigning it to the printer port. I don't know if this will
  14. work in your case, but it's certainly worth a try.
