- Well, heres a quick summary...
- Under system 6.0.x the 8*24GC is faster than the daylights! Truely an
- excellent graphics accelerator.
- Under system 7.xn the 8*24GC sucks the big wonz in the performance department.
- Frankly it slows down any graphic operations in any mode other than 24bit and
- also tends to turn off the 68030's internal cacheing (although there is
- a startup program called cachebit to turn this back on)
- The 8*24GC's support by apple computer is just little short of scandalous.
- Frankly I think that either apple should hire some programmers who know what
- they are doing to give us a use for that huge hunk of silicon in our machines
- or it should offer some sort of palpative to help us get the bad taste out of
- our mouths. Heck even an init that set up the GC's CPU to do jpeg compresssion
- would be better than having it sit there and do nothing.
- In conclusion... if you are working under system 6 and have no plans to upgrade
- to system 7 then the GC is pretty fast and you can get mine from me pretty cheap,
- but if you are using system 7 or plan to upgrade get a 3d party card.
- In fact having been burned now on both the MacXL and the 8*24GC you might even
- be better dealing with apple as little as possible (alhtough I must admit they
- have gotten a considerable fraction of my money for a long time ;)
