  13.   Hopefully this post will save someone ALOT of headaches that I had
  14. to go through with my Powerbook Duo.

  16.   My experience concerns the hard disk crashing all the time whenever I
  17. was for to do a hard shutdown (system freezes or bombs).  The Disk Tools
  18. floppy would respond with "This disk is damaged. Do you want to Initialize?"
  19. The cuplrit was Bafore Dark.  This nifty sharware utility changes the
  20. mundane desktip background to neat patterns.  Unfortunately whatever it
  21. does to the system file or desktop is not entirely compatible with System7.1
  22. or the Duo.  I am not sure about other Macs running system 7.1.  Maybe someone
  23. can check this out.

  25. Evidently the Volume Information Block gets corrupted.  It requires MacTools2.0
  26. to repair otherwise your only solution is to reformat.  This is a pain because
  27. NO ONE has System 7.1 Emergency Utility disks out there.  Creating your
  28. own is close to impossible.  A minimum system 7.1 floppy takes up about
  29. 1.2 Meg of space.  Neither MacTools or Norton can fit.
  30.   I ended up borrowing an external HD, buying the special Powerbook
  31. SCSI cable, installing a bootable system 7.1 and running MacTools off that.
  32. A major pain  !!!  I eventually figured it out and trashed Before Dark
  33. lest I forget and install it again.

  35.   Hopefully this will save some one from wasting countless hours trying to
  36. recover their hard drive.
