- Greetings.
- I've posted an article wondering about the possiblity to use PC cases instead
- of cases sold with the drives. While i was cleaning my account, i found an old
- article who handeled this issue. I'm reposting it.

- Pat:
- What I did was buy a PC tower case. Call around to PC repair/
- parts dealers for a good price. I got a case with 3 half height
- 5-1/4" form factor slots, 2 half height 3-1/2" form factor slots,
- and a 230 Watt power supply, for $100. Because I wasn't putting a
- mother board and slots in the case I was able to put 2 full height
- 5-1/4" hard drives in the bottom of the case. In a couple months,
- and after I can find an internal SCSI CD-ROM drive, I'm going to
- put a CD-ROM in the top slot. I went to a local cable builder
- and got a 50 wire flat cable constructed with the 50-pin SCSI
- headers and a 50-pin Centronics on one end. The Centronics
- connector "hangs" out the back, and I daisy chain all the drives
- making sure the terminators have been removed from all but the
- last drive. If you buy internal drives, tell them you want them
- without the drive hardware, you'll save about $20. I suppose
- I could have put Centronics connectors at both ends, so I
- could daisy chain other drives, and use external terminators
- but... this was the way I did it. In fact that might be better
- if you are going to connect to an FX as it requires a different
- external terminator and I don't know if the regular teminators
- that come inside the drives will work with it.

- PS: The case looks really nice sitting on my desk, and the power
- button is convenienly located on the front.
-
- PPS: You will probably need to get a bunch of jumpers so you can
- set the SCSI address. I think you can get them at Radio Shack.
- The mail order places I've bought drives from in the past have
- included data sheets that showed the location of the SCSI address
- jumpers and have indicated how to set them.
-
- PPPS (last one, I swear!): You'll also probably need to get
- some power cable splitters (Y-cable, 1 female->2 males) as
- the power supply will probably only have 2-3 hard drive power
- connectors of the right size.
