- Hey folks. I just got a new Performa 600 computer, and I am very happy with
- it. However, I keep hearing various computer magazines refer to it as a
- cripple, only in more words. Often, they don't even mention it at all. A
- 68030 running at 32 MHz - a cripple? Says who?!?
- What I would like to know is exactly why everyone is ripping on the Performa
- computers. It seems to be a GREAT DEAL easier to buy a computer if you can
- walk into a store, quote a little plastic, and dump a big brown box in your
- trunk. PC users have had that kind of convenience for a long time, why
- shouldn't we? However, I am getting off the subject. Back to the "wimp
- factor."
- OK, it's like this. The Performa 600 clearly beats the heck out of the IIsi,
- right? The IIsi does only 20 MHz, and only has that one sorry expansion slot.
- It doesn't even have a coprocessor hole! The Performa 600 has three NuBus
- slots, a PDS, and a special hole you can drop a FPU into. Plus, there is that
- small performace boost of running at 32 MHz. The Performa 600 also uses VRAM,
- so the video doesn't eat up your RAM. And people are looking down at this
- computer. Well, I'm sorry, but I fail to see why. Sure, it doesn't have the
- RAM cache that the IIvx has, but it is also significantly cheaper, and you
- don't have to wait forever for the thing to arrive.
- Well, I think I have made my point quite clear. I say the Performa 600 is one
- of the best midrange computers out, and probably the best compromise interms
- of price, performance, and so forth. (However, I still think that AtEase is
- an abomination, as is System 7.) Obviously, we'd all like a Quadra, but since
- we can't have that, I think the Performa 600 is the best deal out. Thank you.
