  15. Hi!  I recently got the GUS, and am impressed by the sound quality [most of the
  16. time].  The GUS emits two clicks before playing any sort of .mid sound, and 
  17. squeaks when starting and stopping sounds in Starcon2.  But otherwise, the
  18. board works nicely, and does better DACing than the SB.  Also, I have some
  19. games which fail with the SB and work with the GUS [Battles of Destiny comes
  20. to mind].  If I can get it to work under OS/2, then I will finally realize my
  21. dream of playing Falcon3 - it had failed to work at all under DOS [namely the
  22. digitized sounds were very slow - probably my 486-50 EISA moboard speed], and
  23. without sound under OS/2.

  25. But, my main bizarrotronic sistuation is that it killed my Win31 enhanced mode
  26. operation.  After I installed the card, I could not run Win.  I then removed 
  27. the card, and still could not run it.  I reinstalled Win, and could not run it 
  28. then either.  On a whine, I loaded Win with the /s parameter, and voila - it 
  29. works.  However, the big problem is that the GUS drivers are for enh mode.

  31. I tried a fix my one of my friends suggested, namely the VirtualHDIrq=Off 
  32. setting in the system.ini file, but that did not work either.

  34. Incidentally, when I say win does not work, it means that it dumps me back into
  35. DOS just at the point at which the windows background should appear.

  37. My system - 486-50 EISA, 16mb RAM, AMI FASTSCSI-C controller w/ 1mb, Roland
  38. LAPC-1, the GUS, Diamond Speedstar Plus, ATI 8514 Ultra.

  40. I run win only with XMS, not EMS [EMS screws up Stunt Island, Ultima7, 
  41. Comanche Max Overkill].  So no QEMM problems or anything.
