- A friend of mine got a HITACHI dk511-8 67MB MFM hard drive. He was told that
- the hard drive can be encoded into RLL w/ 105 MB capacity. So, he used an
- Adaptec RLL controller's (model # ?) built-in ROM utility to initialize
- the hard drive, then used MS-DOS 5.0's FDISK and FORMAT to do partition and
- format separately. Everything worked fine up to this point. However, after
- he had loaded several applications, utilities and ran them, problems occurred.
- DOS' CHKDSK /f reported cross-linked files, invalid allocation, ... etc.
- When running DOS's EDIT, DOS sometimes complained 'out of memory' (he got 4 M
- SIMMs installed).
-
- Does anyone of you have this kind of problems ? What caused these ?
-
- Is that because he used the wrong RLL controller ?
-
- Highly appreciate any comments. Thanks.

- P.S. The hard drive is working fine when used as MFM w/ a MFM controller.
