- I have an interesting modem problem. I have a six year old U.S. Robotics
- 2400 baud modem. In the past it has worked just fine in my 4.77/8 MHz
- pc clone running kermit version 3.11.
-
- I have recently switched motherboards to a 12 MHz pc clone. I can
- still download binary files in 1200 baud with no problems. However, now
- when I try to download files (binary especially) in 2400 baud, I have
- problems with the pc locking up to the point of having to reboot. When
- I restart kermit, I am still connected to the host. The amount that gets
- downloaded before it locks up varies. It is sometimes within a few packets
- from the time it starts, sometimes after 80 K has been downloaded.
-
- I thought the problem might be with the modem at the other end or the
- phone line, but trying to download files on another machine works just
- fine. I have run the self tests on my modem. The local analog and digital
- loopback tests run just fine. However, the remote digital loopback test
- (which the manufacturer assures me conforms to the CCITT V.54 standard)
- returns around 20 errors per 255 seconds of testing, while the local digital
- loopback returns 0 errors consistently.
-
- Could it be that the new motherboard is just too fast for this fairly
- ancient modem? I don't think this could be the case, since the bus still
- runs at the same speed. Could my UART be too slow? Could it be a problem
- with DMA? Or am I wrong on any of this? Any help on this would be appreciated.
-
- Please e-mail any suggestions and I will post a summary.
-
- Thanks much.
