  19. Actually UART isnt really part of the name of the device..  Its a description
  20. of the device (your usuage is sort of like saying you own an AUTOMOBILE FORD
  21. MUSTANG instead of just saying you have a Ford Mustang automobile).

  23. As for if you can replace it, this depends.  ALMOST for sure you can do it,
  24. however some serial cards dont use a standard 40pin DIP package for their
  25. UART.  Some of them put them in an ASIC with several other UARTs, and possibly
  26. even some other support hardware.

  28. You also may have to de-solder your old UART if it does happen to be a 40pin
  29. DIP, but non set into a socket.

  33. Just try asking around town.  I was going to buy mine (several years ago) mail 
  34. order, and found it locally for only 1$ more (im sure that shipping/handling
  35. on the mail order IC would have been much more than 1$ anyway, plus I didnt
  36. have to wait to get it).

  40. This CANT be true.  Ive had an NS1650AFN in my serial card for just under 2
  41. years, and at the time I bought it for about 15$.  Id say that current prices
  42. are under 10$..
