- Hmm, I've got some sort of Seagate 200 Meg drive in my computer
- and it's fairly quiet. We also have a couple Maxtor and Western Digital
- 340 Meg drives here. The WD drives are quieter.
-
- From my experience your computer's case is going to have much more of a
- bearing on quietness than the manufacturer of the harddrive. A good
- solid case will dampen the noise better.

-
- Because the Seagate numbers are in minutes and the WD ones are in hours?
-
- 100,000 hours equates to 100000/24/365 = 11.4 years.
-
- So on the average this drive is going to last you much longer than the
- usefulness of it. In five years you'll want something bigger, faster
- whatever.
-
-
- Personally I don't like quiet drives. That includes floppies as well.
- I want to be able to hear the computer doing something. Now I don't
- like shrill whining sounds, but a good solid chunk chunk now and
- then is good.
-
- My favorite is the RZ55 and RZ58 drives in our DECStation 5000/200, these
- drives make good solid chunks and so I know that the computer is trying
- to do something and it's not just the network hanging again.
