- First of all, is there an FAQ that deals specificly with video hardware for
- pc clones? I've been watching the net for some time now, and have yet to see
- such a beast, but maybe I just missed it.
-
- I'm in the market for a 486 machine, with plans to run Linux and X, and
- have a few questions, mainly concerning video boards. What I have in mind
- is a local bus system, hopefully a dx2-66, to be used primarily for
- software development. Two vendors that I'm currently looking at are Gateway
- and Zeos. The Gateway comes with the ATI Ultra Pro, and the Zeos has a
- Local Bus Viper or something like that. Does anyone have experience,
- good, bad, or otherwise, (aside from the fact that the Zeos dx2-66
- machines don't seem to be shipping) with a similar machine from either
- of these companies.
-
- It seems to me (please correct me if I'm wrong) that the most popular
- video boards use either the MACH 32, the S3, or the Wietek (sp?) 9000 chips.
-
- Questions:
- o Does XFree86 (which is what Linux uses right?) have support
- for all of these?
-
- o Are there any boards I should avoid due to lack of support
- (other than Diamond, which I've already heard about).
-
- o Can anyone provide me with or point me to benchmark info on these cards
- under Linux/X? What I would really like to see are Xstone ratings on a
- 486DX2-66. I've seen WinMarks on most of these cards. Is it safe to assume
- that if Machine A does twice as many WinMarks as Machine B, then Machine A
- will do ~twice as many Xstones as Machine B? And finally, do Xstones
- provide a reasonable measure of real world X performance, or is this
- benchmark about as meaningless as drystones?
-
- Nearly all of my unix experience has been on sparc 2's. My biggest fear
- is shelling out all this dough for a 486, only to find it to be a real
- dog compared to what I'm used to. Especially now with the microSparc's becoming
- competitive pricewise.
- Does anyone care to comment on the performance of sparc2 vs. 486dx2-66?
-
- Also, any general comments and recommendations on 486/Linux/X systems that would
- help me decide what system to buy would be greatly appreciated.
-
- Many thanks,
