I am currently running PCBoard 14.5 with a CD drive that is about an 800ms
access time. PCBoard does not require any special software that I know of. The
CD that I have set up is just like a floppy disk, all you have to do is tell
PCBoard the directory on the disk you want people to be able to download off of,
this I think is in the DNLDPATH.LST file or something like that, I can't
remember off hand. I am only running a 2400 baud modem though, but I noticed
when people download off of the CD that at the very begining of each file, there
is a pause that is quite a bit longer that when people download off of my hard
disk, I assume this is the drive moving the head to appropriate spot on the disk
which is considerably slower than that of hard disk. After this the drive lite will come on for about 1 sec or less about once every minute or two (have never
timed it), which probably means that the modem is much slower than the drive,
and is just getting the next piece of information it needs to send. I would
think that even my slow CD drive would be able to keep up with the 14.4 modems,
since the time between accesses with my lowly 2400 is so long. The person that
used to run my BBS before I took it over, used to run a high speed modem with
the same drive, and he said it worked just fine, but I don't know what kind
of transfer rates he was getting when users logged on using high speed modems.
I will try to find out, but he said the CD drive kept up very well. I am also
planning on getting a 14.4 modem in January sometime, so if you find out that
there are problems please let me know, but I don't think there should be any
problems. BTW the CD drive I have is the one from DAK for about $200-$250, it
