- It is definitely beneficial to know your computer inside out, but
- the savings in building it yourself vary depending on where you
- live. In the Bay Area, it is often just as well to buy from vendors.
- In other parts of the country, who knows.

- The problems is in subtle uncompatibilities. But if you are sure
- about the parts, you can build a custom system for about the same
- price as at a shop. You may not save money, but you do have the
- choice of video and hard drives and monitors that you might not
- have gotten.

- If you do it, stick to reliable parts. Since you are on your own
- for support, it's just to avoid problems. While you still have a
- warranty on most parts, you have to deal with the trouble. A dealer
- would simply replace it, and do it himself.
