- The editorial is typical of Computer Shopper, which is why I usually
- just look at the pictures. The 486-->586sx upgrade is the only
- one I've seen which makes any sense... the 486sx-->486dx2 idea
- is just a marketing ploy by Intel to get you to buy two of their
- processors instead of buying the right one the first time. It costs
- them more to make a 486sx, since they have to disable the math
- co-processor, but they reduce the price by $100 or so to suck you
- into getting an upgrade chip for $600 or $700 later on!
-
- I'm not buying a 486DX with local bus until I can get one with the
- 240 pin upgrade socket for a 586sx (P24T) chip. Dell and Zeos have
- them now -- I'll wait for Gateway and Micronics to get their
- collective act together. I do hope that Intel doesn't disable the
- P24T's FPU or seriously reduce its power in some other way, to make
- the upgrade less useful to me; but I'm waiting for the socket to be
- there just in case it is worth it.
