  18. Wrong!  Hydrazine is a super carcinogen, and lethal at low levels, but 
  19. it is used on some military aircraft.  The most notable is the F-16.
  20. Hydrazine is kept in special containers for the EPU, to provide some
  21. minimal electrical power in case of engine/generator failure.  It is 
  22. impossible to "fly" the F-16 without electrical power.  There is no
  23. mechanical control linkage from the cockpit, only the electrical
  24. force sensors in the joystick.  You lose one engine, or one generator,
  25. you've lost it all!  Hence, the EPU and hydrazine, which provides a 
  26. near-failsafe method of returning control, even if you only use it
  27. to control the ballistics of your oversized lawn dart sufficiently
  28. to avoid augering into a populated area.

  30. There are a lot of special requirements for storage of hydrazine at
  31. installation level, and a lot of sites have had to beef up their storage
  32. facilities to support F-16 operations.  So be it.  It's a tradeoff 
  33. against losing a very expensive single-engine fighter aircraft.
  34. There would be a lot fewer F-16s in the inventory if it weren't for
  35. hydrazine....
