  14. There was much discussion recently about whether a 700 box could support
  15. 15 XTerminals etc. The replies seemed to indicate that YES it was possible as
  16. long as the 700 had sufficient memory (96Mb-128Mb) and maybe a fast disk ;
  17. indeed some sites appeared to be running with a lot more than 15 XTerminals.

  19. I have several questions ....

  21. 1. What sort of packages do the users (at these sites) typically run ? 
  22.    We have experienced problems with 5 users on a 32MB 720 ; We believe this
  23.    is because ...
  24.    a. users run *LOTS* of different packages on different XTerminals but 
  25.       executing on the same 700 box, eg different clocks, window managers 
  26.       (twm,vue,olvwm), editors etc .
  27.    b. users run *LARGE* packages (eg interleaf, teamwork, ingres) which eat up
  28.       memory causing excessive swapping.
  29.  
  30. 2. Will adding more memory help or is this a short term solution - sooner or 
  31.    later that (extra) memory will be used up.
  32.    
  33. 3. Does HPUX (for the 700s) swap AND page properly ? We can see lots of swap 
  34.    activity but we do not think it is paging (ie it is swapping whole programs
  35.    out rather than just a block) and this is the root cause of our performance 
  36.    problems.

  38. Any thoughts on the above will be much appreciated ...
