- There was much discussion recently about whether a 700 box could support
- 15 XTerminals etc. The replies seemed to indicate that YES it was possible as
- long as the 700 had sufficient memory (96Mb-128Mb) and maybe a fast disk ;
- indeed some sites appeared to be running with a lot more than 15 XTerminals.
-
- I have several questions ....
-
- 1. What sort of packages do the users (at these sites) typically run ?
- We have experienced problems with 5 users on a 32MB 720 ; We believe this
- is because ...
- a. users run *LOTS* of different packages on different XTerminals but
- executing on the same 700 box, eg different clocks, window managers
- (twm,vue,olvwm), editors etc .
- b. users run *LARGE* packages (eg interleaf, teamwork, ingres) which eat up
- memory causing excessive swapping.
-
- 2. Will adding more memory help or is this a short term solution - sooner or
- later that (extra) memory will be used up.
-
- 3. Does HPUX (for the 700s) swap AND page properly ? We can see lots of swap
- activity but we do not think it is paging (ie it is swapping whole programs
- out rather than just a block) and this is the root cause of our performance
- problems.
-
- Any thoughts on the above will be much appreciated ...
