- Bob,
-
- This is how I understand the situation. The original SCSI-1
- specifications were a little too loose. This caused a lot of minor
- problems with various SCSI devices. In the early days, I remember
- hearing some Mac owners reporting slight problems with various SCSI
- drives (i.e. it might work fine with one particular brand but have
- problems with another). Another problem was the lack of a standard
- SCSI port. The Mac used one type while other computers used a
- different type. This caused problems with getting the right cabling.
-
- Anyway, the SCSI-2 specifications were proposed to help tighten up the
- original standard. One of the problems the new standard addressed was
- the lack of a standard SCSI port.
-
- In addition, the SCSI-2 specifications allowed several _optional_
- features to help boost speed. One was called Fast SCSI and used
- synchronous transfers to double the transfer rate. The other was
- called Wide SCSI and used a 16-bit port as opposed to the standard
- 8-bit port (I think this is implemented with a separate cable with the
- additional 8 lines).
-
- Finally, the SCSI-2 specifications were designed to be compatible with
- the original specifications. Any SCSI-1 device should work fine.
-
- From what I understand, the Falcon030 does have a true SCSI-2 port.
- It just doesn't support the _optional_ extras. I think the same is
- true with the NeXT computers.
