- I disagree with that statement. I'll tell you in what way: For the price,
- the Falcon has the following things that other computers do not seem to
- consistently have: (not mentioning the DSP, to show how wrong you are.)
-
- -> Very fast hard disk port (SCSI-II) that uses the concept of DMA
-
- (unlike most Macs, Quadra, and ANY low cost PC, right?)
-
- -> 16 bit sampler and 16 bit 8 voice 50Khz sound (though DMA, top that!)
-
- (NO personal computer I know of has a ADC except the NeXT)
-
- -> Better than VGA graphics accessed DIRECTLY in the 32 bit RAM
-
- (You'll need to dish out more money for a graphics card
- capable of similar performance that doesn't go through
- some slow bus.)
-
- -> Quite a fast RS-232 port, bidirectional parallel port, built-in
- network port that sounds quite capable, built in MIDI ports,
- 2 built in jystick ports, 2 built-in analog joystick ports,
- a cartrige port, a mouse that is made to work with the computer
- from day 1.
-
- (On PC's, an RS-232 port and Parallel port are listed as features,
- as if you're paying for them or something, not to mention they
- give you an el-cheapo keyboard FREE. Lucky buyer.)
-
- I'll stop here, that should be enough. For $799 U.S., you just
- will not find a computer as capable as the Falcon would be if
- it were out. Including the Amiga 1200. The Amiga 1200 is pretty
- close, and will probably sell well because it is a very good deal
- (that is, regardless of whether the Falcon has a DSP or not.)
-
- And thanks to Eric R. Smith the Falcon will run on quite a decent
- multitasking operating system. It has pipes, forks, shared text,
- universal drives, and looks pretty good. The whole operating system
- runs pretty smoothly (I have seen Multi-tos at the Atari Messe '92)
- and I don't think any $799 PC configuration would ever come close
- to the performance of the Falcon, especially were it running
- a Microsoft's DOS and WINDOWS setup.
-
- My point for all this is that It seems to me that at the price,
- the Falcon030 has _many_ things to make it an overall _much_
- better computer than similarly priced Macs and PC's. The Amiga 1200
- seems nice too, although for now, I kinda want a...
