- Well, I finally got a hold of 4 1Mx9 SIMMS and had a go at installing
- them into my 1040STf. I was SO pleased with the results, I just have
- to share them! Anyway, I can say I heartily recommend the Xtra-Ram Deluxe
- SIMM memory upgrade for those of you who aren't afraid of solder, but who
- would rather not bother with it.
-
- This upgrade kit was VERY well documented, with plenty of diagrams and
- detailed instructions. It includes two small boards, one that piggy-backs
- the MMU, and the other that you piggy-back the video shifter chip onto.
- The trickiest part was clipping 4 resistors and putting on 4 jumpers to
- disable the 2 banks of motherboard ram. The jumpers come with those little
- spring-loaded clips, that hook onto the resistors (and the + end of a
- capacitor) kinda like a fishing bobber (or float :). Anyway, once the
- jumpers were on secure, it worked the first time!!
-
- I took my time replacing all the shielding, taking time to power up now
- and then to double-check the memory. After less than 1 hour (well, I had
- already read the manual, and my ST was already naked to the world after
- a TOS upgrade :) I had a full 4MB of memory.
-
- I was so pleased, I thought I would spread the word about this kit (don't
- worry, I have absolutely NO connection with the manufacturer. In fact,
- they're in the UK!) It was very reasonably priced at around $89 (but I got
- it at the WAACE show from Toad at an even better price!) And was incredibly
- easy to install. I would even say it's pretty tough, since as I was
- putting everything back together, my ST kept slipping out of my hands and
- took more than a few bumps on the table.
-
- So, enough rambling. Just my $0.25 worth (inflation, ya know :)
