- Regarding a memory upgrade for a Mega 2ST..
-
- Kenneth, if your Mega 2 is one of the early ones, before Atari
- "redesigned" the motherboard, upgrading the memory is a relatively
- straightforward process, although one that requires some
- technical expertise.
-
- Essentially Atari used the same motherboard for both them Mega 2 and 4,
- simply leaving out half the RAM chips for the Mega 2. There are holes
- where the second half of the RAM can be installed.. the only problem is
- that they are all soldered shut during the manufacturing process.
-
- The upgrade consists of unsoldering the holes, installing sockets and
- bypass capacitors (and one Mega2 that I saw already had the extra
- capacitors installed), and plugging in the RAM chips. Then three
- resistors have to be added, and you'll have a Mega 4.
-
- The costs involved are the RAM chips themselves and the time needed.
- Depending on who you get to do the job, it should cost considerably
- less than $100.
-
- Also, since the chips are mounted directly to the motherboard, you're
- likely to find it to be more reliable than any "solderless" upgrade.
-
- If there's anyone near you who can perform the technical work, this
- would be an ideal thing to do for your Mega..
-
- (You'll probably have enough of your $100 left to get Warp-9 too..!)
