- You're right that I was speaking of the "generic" PC motherboard..
- there always will be special cases that don't fit that generic category
- though.. the two you mentioned are good examples. (Zenith is a good
- example of something that doesn't fit ANY category..!)
-
- Many of the "low profile" systems may also have problems with mounting
- points and slot openings in the case.
-
- The problem is, many of my postings are long enough as it is, without
- going into all the details and exceptions for everything.. what I've been
- trying to counter here is the general body of myths surrounding what
- seems to be the typical Atari owner's knowledge of other computer
- platforms.. the "everybody knows Brand X sucks bigtime" kind of myths..
-
- OK, to restate the motherboard thing.. there IS standardization, and there
- is in MOST cases an easy upgrade path. Nearly ALL motherboards come with
- CPU and BIOS chips. There ARE some exceptions, but most PCs can be easily
- and inexpensively upgraded, either by the user themselves, or by any service
- technician without the need for physical modifications.
-
- (Incidentally, the original IBM PC itself cannot be upgraded this way
- because of the number and spacing of the slots.. I'm surprised no one
- brought that up.. :)
-
- The entire point, which seems to have been lost in all the shouting, is
- that for most owners of PCs, there IS an easy, and inexpensive upgrade
- path available, if they choose to take that route to greater speed or
- computing power.
