- Hmmmm... What you probably want to know is if there's a way you can
- just plug it in with no other chips: No. Like James said, you could
- just get percom or modified XF551 to use it, but it requires the
- outlay of $$$. But while I'm rambling, the disck controller built
- into the ST that uses the Master drive is the SAME exact part that
- is used in the XF551 (WD1772). I've only got two hacks left on my
- in box so to speak, a bus RS232 (which if I got off my butt would only
- take a weekend) & adding a 1772 to the XL buss(which would REALLY tax
- my limited ability & may never be done by me). It's a good topic though
- the cheapest I've found the 1772's for is $25 so it's not the everyman's
- project you'd think. It is interesting to note though, they've come
- out with a new super ST disk controller chip that lets you use 1.4 meg
- drives on the ST & I've heard rumors you can just modify the drive
- controller's clock on an ST to use 1.4 meg disks => the XF551 could
- do the same thing maybe<?>. Bob Wooley's really the guy to get to do
- this stuff, absolute wizard at it. Maybe I'll offer him something like
- 64k of static RAM, a couple of 8040's, some 5.25" 720k drives, & ???
- to take on the project. He has so many other valuble projects on burners
- that I really worry about taking him away from something more important.
- It would be less of a problem if the new super 1.4 meg controllers were
- only a couple of bucks. It really gets limited when you're talking about
- only a couple of people with the right hardware/$$$ & very expensive
- chips<g>.
