- Summary: Yes, you can change BRAM without tools, but it's not recommended

- Are you definitely absolutely positively sure you want to do this without
- using the tools at all? It can be done, but it's a lot less convenient
- than using the tools. The tool calls that change the BRAM locations are
- in ROM, so they're available at all times, no matter what operating system
- you booted (yes, even DOS 3.3), and they're there in all versions of the
- GS.
-
- The reason the BRAM tool calls exist in the first place is that the BRAM
- isn't part of the main memory map--it's essentially peripheral device, and
- you have to access it like any other peripheral device, through its control
- registers in the I/O space. The tool calls exist to protect you from
- having to know the ugly details of how to program the the control
- registers.
-
- If you insist on bypassing the tools, I have some information I can send
- you on how to do it. But the tool calls are a lot easier, and they do work
- on all GS's and all operating systems.
