- Well, maybe its not 'tar' which is causing Brian's problem ...
- It maybe the operating system which doesnt allow him to create files
- he doesnt own. (Quite likely, I'd say ..)

- The solution : yes there probably is a flag you 'dont know about'.
- It would be one which makes all files , that you untar, yours.

- IE: it wont try to untar files as somebody elses,
- it untar's the files with you as owner.
- go find out which flag that is !
