- There have been 3 versions of the IIGS ROM and 2 versions of the motherboard.
- The original motherboard shipped with ROM 0 and 256K. A few months later, it
- shipped with ROM 1 and a free upgrade was available. There was also an upgrade
- for the VGC chip and IIGS's also started including a memory card with 256K.
-
- In 1989, what Apple calls the "1 MB IIGS" was released. It has 1 MB on the
- motherboard and ROM 3. 2 was skipped to create...err...prevent confusion. ROM 3
- is a little better and faster than ROM 1, but you don't need it and can't
- upgrade to it. An Apple employee did tell me the upper chip in the ROM 3 set
- works on a ROM 1 motherboard, but I think one of use misunderstood each other,
- since it is likely that the code in banks FE and FF calls code in banks FC and
- FD. But anyway, ROM 1 is good enough.
-
- On the other hand, you are right, not much runs with 512K. You need 1 MB to run
- System 6, more is preferable. There is a 4 MB memory board selling for under
- $150. Other parties have recommended it.
-
- Your 512K IIGS already has a RAM card in it, but the max capacity of it is
- likely 1 MB. You could get by with 1.25 MB, but it is recommended that you
- replace it with a higher capacity baord.
-
- >should I go to the new operating system?
-
- If you have a hard drive (definitely recommended) there's no reason not to use
- System 6.0, the latest version of the operating system.
